A Glance At Some Of The Newest Wireless Audio Gadgets
Recently a large number of wireless audio products have appeared such as latest-generation wireless headphones, iPods, cell phones and wireless amplifier products that promise to cut the cord. We will take a look at some of the most recent products to discover which applications they work for.
A number of products come with wireless already built in while some others, in particular streaming audio products, frequently have optional wireless functionality. Latest generation iPods and cell phones already come with built-in WiFi and Bluetooth support.
Bluetooth is a relatively low-cost option but has some drawbacks which are often overlooked.
1) Inadequate operating range
Bluetooth usually just provides a 30 foot range. This is satisfactory for single-room applications. On the other hand, this limitation does not allow multi-room streaming using Bluetooth.
2) Limited data transmission capacity
Bluetooth offers a maximum reliable data rate of around 1 Mbps only. This rate is not high enough to transmit uncompressed CD-quality audio. Consequently Bluetooth wireless devices utilize audio compression. Audio compression will deteriorate the audio quality to some extent. High-quality audio transmission generally does not tolerate this type of degradation. Therefore Bluetooth is normally not used in high-end audio devices.
3) Audio delay
The signal transmitted via Bluetooth will bear a slight delay of a minimum of 10 ms. This is for the most part as a result of the audio compression. While being uncritical for MP3 players, this delay may be a problem for video and other real-time applications.
4) No support of multiple headphones
Bluetooth is fairly restricted regarding supporting streaming to many headphones. Streaming to multiple headphones is helpful for several people wanting to listen to the same transmitter. This is less of a problem for MP3 player applications.
WiFi is another widely used wireless protocol that is also suitable for audio streaming. WiFi does support uncompressed audio but will have problems transmitting to a high number of wireless receivers simultaneously. Due to the high availability, WiFi is suitable for streaming audio from a PC. Yet, WiFi products have fairly high power consumption. For this reason wireless headphones usually do not employ this technology.
Wireless speakers and wireless amplifier products for home theater speakers normally use their own proprietary protocol. Entry-level wireless headphones and speakers typically still utilize FM transmission which offers low cost but is prone to noise and audio degradation.
More advanced wireless protocols are based on digital formats which avoid audio distortion and incorporate sophisticated features including error correction to deal with interference from competing wireless devices.
Latest-generation wireless amplifiers employ uncompressed audio transmission. Latest protocols also allow streaming to an infinite number of receivers. This enables whole-house audio distribution.
Some of these protocols support low-latency audio transmission which ensures that the audio of all speakers will be in sync in a multi-channel application. Wireless audio transmitter devices typically operate at 2.4 GHz or sometimes in the less crowded 5.8 GHz frequency band such as Amphony's wireless audio products.
Wireless amplifiers offer different levels of audio quality, output power and standby power. Wireless Class-D amplifiers generally have standby power of 5 Watts or less and a power efficiency of larger than 80% but sometimes high audio distortion. Audiophile wireless amplifiers offer an audio distortion of 0.05% or less.
I have a older tv that uses a antenna jack but i need to plug a A/V cable into. HELP!!!!?
i was wondering irf there was like a converter device that i could attach to the antenna jack on my tv so i could plug Audio/Video jacks into. is there such a device or can i use like a dvd player or wat? plz help!!!
Probably the easiest thing is to use a VCR, if you can find one lying around somewhere. You can plug the A/V cables into it and select them as the input to the VCR. Then use the RF output (Ch 3 or 4) to the TV.
They used to make RF modulators for games and things, but with the new TV standards, those have mostly disappeared from store shelves.
