Canon XA10 - The Perfect Of Both Worlds And Going From An HV30 From An Canon XA10
Even coming from that prosumer Canon HV30 camcorder, the Canon XA10 can be described as huge improvement. The camera is all to easy to hold, the buttons are all for good locations, and the camera just feels simplified. Compared to some other HD camcorders I used by film school, the Canon XA10 feels incredibly easier to control.
The difference is additional dramatic comparing it to my unwanted HV30 rig. It's much nicer not to have the added awkwardness of the battery-powered XLR adapter. Honestly, the Canon XA10 must look a lot more professional to clients as well.
Image quality in fact is stunning. There is a slight look of shallow depth of field this really is very pleasing to the eye. It is subtle, but noticeable. I've heard it has something to do with the 8-blade iris, but I won't pretend to understand what that really means. All I know is the video quality is better I've personally ever held in the hands.
The Canon XA10 Professional Camcorder also gives much greater control over the image than the more consumer-focused HV20 and also HV30. Now that I've used any Canon XA10's manual focus ring, I definitely don't know how I made movies with out it. The assignable control where it is easy to adjust the exposure, shutter, aperture, etc . is also a great feature with an HD camcorder this inexpensive.
I haven't experienced the rattle problem with all the handle that some users have referred to, maybe there was a bad order produced? The Canon XA10's production seems to own taken place in different sections, so they may have corrected the various bugs at various times. I'm unsure, YMMV. I haven't had to deal with support service from Canon except once to order an XH-A1 hood many years ago, so I can't comment with that either.
No problems at all of importing the AVCHD footage into Last Cut or iMovie. I haven't experimented with with any Windows editors yet, but I'll update this review when i do.
With typical shooting (no IR), the stock battery lasts about so long as you'd expect, maybe a bit even more. Not mind-blowing, but most importantly possibly not too short. I'd recommend getting an increased capacity battery like the BP-827 for anyone who is planning to shoot for extended hours (I think the stock battery is actually a BP-819).
I haven't tested the infrared (IR) function yet, but the camera gives excellent low-light performance even without it. Search or Vimeo 'Canon XA10 low light' and you'll see spinning program so well by this.
The only thing it's missing that I'd like to see is a built-in neutral denseness function. I can always just use ND filters to the front of the lens -- familiar with doing that from the HV20/HV30 nights -- but it's less convenient than a switch on the side. Oh well.
Overall, I highly recommend it to anyone who would like to upgrade to a pro-quality HD camcorder having a cinema-quality picture, who doesn't want to spend a plethora of money on the more expensive options available on the market. If money isn't as much associated with a concern, I'm sure some of your cameras that cost thousands more provide you with more options, but I'm more than very pleased with the quality this Canon XA10 provides.
