APD - The New Entity Among Learning Ailments
As adult or school room admonitions for improved conduct go, "Calm down and try to listen" has to be among the popular ones. But imagine if sometimes, there would be a child who has been constitutionally ill-equipped just to pay attention to that light direction? There exists a new thing in the world of learning conditions. It happens to be known as Auditory Processing Disorder; and even if it's existed forever, it has merely just started to gain some well-deserved focus from the general public as well as the professional medical industry. Auditory processing disorder or APD isn't that well comprehended at this point, but this specific affliction is absolutely seen to affect how the human brain can listen to, and understand sounds. This is not an uncommon situation by any means either - diagnosed or otherwise, 1 out of 5 children is actually stricken.
Rosie O'Donnell, the talk show host as well as actress recently started to stump for this ill-understood syndrome on her show: her son is afflicted with APD. Children with APD start out doing inadequately in class with difficulty reading and with words. Often, they have a hard time comprehending the teacher's directions and a lot of trouble staying put or focusing. Physicians often takes these symptoms and wrongly infer the presence of other learning conditions which are known well to give kids trouble in class - like ADHD.
So how does APD actually work - what is it do? Suppose you know a child suffering from APD; it's winter and you question the child if he wants the heat turned up or down. The child states 'heat up!' Therefore you go and turn the temperature up; yet now the child protests. Apparently by 'heat up' the child supposed the heat was too high already and you were to do exactly what it took to solve the issue. Giving imprecise replies isn't the only problem; they have a great deal of trouble even hearing words and phrases accurately - to them rhyming words sound all the same. In case you mentioned, "She took the car too far" the child would pick up "she took the car too car". He will know that this made absolutely no sense, but wouldn't be able to see exactly what you meant either. The brain just converts sounds around and makes them hard to understand. Kids with APD thus, learn few words and phrases, and can't actually understand exactly how words go together, because a lot of the things they pick up is all jumbled up.
And as for focusing in class, it is not that their minds roam like the mind of a child with ADHD will. It's just that their auditory system is unable to perceive as well as tell apart foreground and background noises. In case there are actually sounds in a school room of the other children shuffling and murmuring a bit, and the instructor is speaking in a crystal clear singular voice, the APD mind hears them all the same way, at the exact same level; and the teacher's voice is drowned out by all the low-level background chatter. They do listen hard, but it becomes difficult whenever there is so much going on at the same sound level. Learning ailments such as these can be very difficult for others to understand as well as get used to.
Language therapists could actually help. The child can receive training to work hard to determine rhyming words apart. At school, the child can wear sound-isolating earphones attached to a microphone the instructor speaks into. This way all the background chit chat is eliminated by the electronics, and the child merely hears the instructor's voice. No one really knows how learning disorders like these work. There is a good deal of scientific research directed at these new findings; but the one bit of great news here is that there is nothing here that affects the kid's intellect. It's just the way the intelligence is able to communicate with the world that is troubled.

Brightcove Extends Its Video Platform to Host HTML5 Apps (readwriteweb)
For the last three years, Brightcove has been implementing a steady transition
from a YouTube alternative, to a premium video services provider, to a Web
functionality provider. The last critical step in that transition may have
taken place yesterday, as the company once considered a Google takeover target
makes its move in the fast-growing HTML5 apps platforms market.
Unlike appMobi, whose mobiUs ecosystem uses a utility model for billing
customers on a granular scale, Brightcove's new App Cloud will be a premium
Web apps host. It will provide APIs that aim to fill in HTML5's many device-
specific gaps, including for accessing tablets' built-in cameras,
accelerometers, and location finders. And it will charge developers fees
starting at $15,000 per year once their apps go live.

"Pure HTML5 web apps cannot appear in app markets like the iTunes App Store or
Google Android Market, but these apps can because they have that native
wrapper," reads a corporate blog post yesterday from Jeff Whatcott,
Brightcove's chief marketing officer. "This wrapper also gives these apps
access to native capabilities like the camera, microphone, contact list, or
notification system that are off limits to the browser."
It's the wrapper that substantiates ...
