The Red Dot Alternative The Back-up Iron Sights
Whilst flip up back-up iron sights have become almost universal on AR series rifles in recent years, they have their limitations. First of all, they're not instantaneously available - you have to lose precious seconds flipping them up. This can make all the difference in a variety of competitive and combat situations. Secondly, you are back to relying on early 20th century technology. One of the best alternatives is to have an offset mounted or piggybacked red dot sight instantly available. It can be used to engage targets that pop up at close range.
One of the most popular options as a secondary red dot is the immensely strong Aimpoint Micro T-1. Machined or extruded components are manufactured from 6000 series aluminium, the Micro is 2.4" long and 1.6" tall and weighs just 3.7 ounces with its standard Weaver/Picatinny mount and only three ounces without it. This sight is parallax free and rated to depths of up to 80ft. It is powered by a single three volt battery that can keep it running for 50,000 hours (or over five years) on a daylight setting of 7. There are six night vision and seven daylight settings. A single 4 MoA red dot is used as the aiming point - this is the only Aiming pattern Aimpoint have ever offered and they insist it is still the best. Adjustment takes the form of 1/2" at 100 yard clicks with the adjuster tool made part of the lens cap. The Micro is mil spec anodized. The US Army has already issued the T-1 in trials quantities in Afghanistan where infantry combat in mountainous terrain is driving the need to reduce weight. Mounts are available for a bewildering array of applications including both vertical and canted offset units.
Not everyone wears night vision goggles or habitually SCUBA dives with their gun, therefore the manufacturer has come out with the 15 ft rated Aimpoint Micro H-1 model which has 12 day settings, including one extra bright one. The sight is otherwise identical to the night vision capable Micro T-1 and is ideal for sport shooting, hunting and pest control. The H-1 has a great following in the Nordic countries for waterfowl hunting, moose and wild boar and does not look out of place on a sporting arm.
For those with higher power optics, the US Army recently followed the US Navy's lead and type classified the L3 Insight Mini Red Dot Sightor MRDS. This 3.5 MoA dot unit is 1.9" long, 1.1" wide and 1.5" hight and weighs an incredible 0.85 ounces due to its immensely strong polymer chassis. It uses a single CR-1632 lithium battery and comes with a windage/elevation adjustment tool, mounting screws and lens cleaning pen. The sight uses 1 MoA clicks and has four brightness levels which can be overridden by the sights own light sensor which adapts to ambient light levels. The Micro Red Dot Sight will initially be issued to snipers and designated marksmen but could well end up on the M150 ACOG. This sight fits any mount designed for the Docter red dot sight and can replace that sight in any application.

Python eats deer in Florida (weblogsinc)
Filed under: Learning, Photos, North America, United States, Ecotourism, News
It seems to me that no one wants to be around a 16 foot python in the
wilderness, especially not if that python eats deer with one gulp, but
everyone wants to see photos, watch videos, and, generally speaking, relish in
the attractively discomforting news that a python swallowed a deer. So, this
is what's been happening in south Florida lately. The 139.1 pound snake
weighed 215.4 with the deer in its stomach when it was contained in the
Everglades. Officials from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission killed the
snake with a shotgun as to deter it from traveling north.
Native to Southeast Asia, Burmese pythons, such as this one, are popular pets
in the United States. Snake owners sometimes aren't prepared to deal with the
Burmese's rapid growth rate, which can cause a 20 inch snake to grow to 8 feet
in just a year's time. Oftentimes these surprised pet owners let their snake
out into the wild when they can no longer cope with having them at home. And
so, alas, check out some of the photos of the python at ...
