The Elements of Hip-Hop Beats

One of the two ingredients that make a hip-hop song is its instrumental. Beats are the entire music and sounds, minus the lyrics of the song. It can complicated pattern or simple loop. A hip-hop song based on a relatively simple beat usually has around eight bars at the very least. A hip-hop song with more complicated beats, on the other hand, may have a variations in the loop for the verse and the chorus. A hip-hop musician may also add beats to the song’s opening, breakdown, and finish.

There are 4 elements that build a beat. They include: (1) MIDI drum patterns (2) bassline (3) supporting orchestration (4) one shot samples.

To start with, hip-hop drum beats are made up of MIDI drum patterns or audio loops. These two build the centre of a hip-hop song. You can use just one or you can use a blend of both. MIDI drum patterns are usually found in your drum pattern editor or MIDI piano editor. MIDI drum patterns are created by triggering the drums from a control pad surface.

Secondly, hip-hop beats are made up of a bassline. Basslines can be found in audio and MIDI form. But it is recommended that you go with MIDI because you can create sounds with deep low waveforms in real time. Unlike that of audio bassline sounds which cannot be transposed effortlessly.

Thirdly, beats contain supporting orchestration. Orchestration simply means that you pick instruments that can be mixed together. This means that you manually select and combine different instruments together and then finally select what feels right.

Lastly, hip-hop beats also have dubs and snips. Samples available in audio sequencers nowadays add a dramatic effect to any song. These effects add quality and a sense of timing for this type of music genre.

These are the four essential elements of beats. These make great hiphop tracks of today’s generation.
